INSIGHTS
Case study

By autumn 2025 the brand held the number two position in American Irish whiskey by volume. Shoppers knew it. Bartenders poured it. And in the off-premise aisle, plenty of those same shoppers still walked past it, because nothing in that four-second decision made picking it up feel urgent. Off-premise is where the category is won and where brands can see the least. Scan data arrives weeks late, aggregated by chain, and stripped of any trace of the person who actually bought the bottle. The brand wanted three outcomes from a single program: measurable sell-through inside the Q4 window, a structural reason for a shopper to put more than one bottle in the basket, and a first-party audience the brand still owned after the promotion ended.

Awareness was never the problem. The shelf was.

A rebate that pays more when the basket grows

The campaign ran on a tiered cash-back structure. Rather than a flat amount per bottle, the offer scaled with the number of qualifying bottles on the receipt, so the shopper who was already reaching for one had a concrete reason to reach for two.

Prompt at shelf

Case cards, neck hangers and shelf talkers carry a short code and a plain instruction. No app to download and no account to create.

Shopper texts in

One text starts the flow and captures the mobile number at the same moment. The reply carries the offer terms and the upload link.

Receipt upload

The shopper photographs the receipt. Validation reads the retailer, date, line items and bottle count, and flags duplicates automatically.

Tier applied

Payout is calculated against the tier the receipt qualifies for, so a two-bottle receipt earns visibly more than a one-bottle receipt.

Cash back, within 48 hours

Funds land by digital payout, usually within 24 to 48 hours. Speed is what turns a rebate from an obligation into a reason to tell a friend.

The audience stays

Every validated participant is an opted-in, permissioned contact with a verified purchase behind them, owned by the brand for the next campaign.

Tiers beat flat offers

A flat rebate subsidizes a purchase that was probably happening anyway. A tiered rebate buys the second bottle, and the second bottle is where the margin math starts working.

Payout speed is the offer

Mail-in rebates lose most of their audience between intent and redemption. Same-day digital payout keeps participation high enough that the data is worth reading.

The list outlives the campaign

The 1,283 bottles paid for the program. The 5,000 permissioned contacts, each with a verified purchase attached, are what the brand still has in Q1.
